In recent years, wireless mesh network has been as one of the emerging wireless network structures. It combines characteristics of wireless local network with those of ad hoc network to perform the transmission of data through dynamic routing within network nodes. When some links or nodes fail to work, they can use the multi-hop technology to find another route and continue to deliver the messages to desired destinations, maintaining the connection uninterrupted. In addition, wireless mesh network also has the advantages of simple setting, low cost, and large covering area. Cross-layer design has become one popular research issue to improve the system performance in wireless network. This is because that the conventional layered structure of wired network is not suitable for wireless network. Regarding to this issue, there have been many proposed cross-layer designs in the ad hoc network, sensor network, and cellular network. In this paper, we proposed a cross-layer routing protocol in wireless mesh network. The best path for data transmission is determined based on the two metrics, estimated transmission delay and power budget. Simulation results have showed that the proposed scheme, compared with DSR protocol, can significantly improve the system throughput.
