This study explores how Taiwan Punks, immersed in boundless media spectacles of punk images, manage to explore Punk as a counter culture and fumble for their punk identity in a Capitalist consumer society. Focusing on punk clothing as the interface via which people get to know what punks are like, the author tries to examine how those self-claimed punks feel about being a punk and whether they really know something beyond a bare eccentric punk appearance, as displayed in their unique punk clothing. Drawing on two main theories in performance paradigm, i.e., the Spectacle-Performance theory and the Resistance-Performance theory, he develops a scheme to probe how Taiwan punks might vary in their understanding of punk culture with its unique protest spirit, expressed summarily as anti-Capitalism and anarchy. Based on an in-depth interview with 17 local punks, the study gives an explanation of the variation of local punks from shallow to deep in terms of a sense of their punk identity.
