The purpose of this study is to present the self-regulation process after married. Through in-depth interviews with six Taiwanese newlyweds, qualitative data were analyzed in using grounded theory approach. A preliminary model is founded that the self-regulation process in marital relation is influenced by “Zhong-yong”. In order to achieve relational harmony individuals use various strategies of self-regulation depending on the situations confronted. Results show women use “depend on”, “change herself”, or “become a traditional role” strategies to achieve the “happy” specific goal between the couple and their families of origin. In addition, partner’s support can increase the self-regulatory strength. Adjustment between spouses, people try differential means and hope to reach the “conjugal bliss”, and “balance” goals. But one’s strategies of using will be influenced by the interaction between wives and husbands. About adjustment between family and work, the self-regulation processes of partner is decided by “man are breadwinners; women are housekeepers”. Because this perception is rooted in Taiwanese, after married, men focus on the work and women emphasize on the family. Gender differences were found in the strategies and goals that husbands and wives use in dealing with adjustment between family and work.
