The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether the differences in personal and environmental factors of adolescents would influence their cognition and attitude to substance abuse. Both literature review and questionnaire survey were used in this study. Based on literature review, this study investigated the current status, laws, regulations of adolescents substance abuse, cognition and attitude to substance abuse and its relevant theories, and relevant causes of adolescent substance abuse so as to form questionnaires. Questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the opinions and viewpoints of adolescents on the cognition and attitude to substance abuse. 1,228 students were selected as subjects from junior high schools in Taipei County. The data were analyzed by frequency distribution analysis, percentage, mean, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffe post hoc comparison method, Turkey's honest significant difference(HSD) test, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Major findings of the study include: 1. The rate of correct answers for the cognition test of substance abuse was 62.9%. 2. The most common source of “drugs” was television and broadcasting programs, followed by teachers and government propaganda. 3. Most students disapproved of addictive drugs as for the attitude to substance abuse. 4. There was a significant correlation between cognition and attitude about the substance abuse. (γ=.22, p<.001). The result showed that the higher score about cognition, the fewer students agreed on using addictive drugs. 5. We could predict the cognition and attitude of the students via their demographic, personal and environmental factors. 6. The predictive rate of cognition was 12.9%; attitude was 37.9%.
