In this research, design and control of a reactive distillation process to produce dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is studied. Suitable thermodynamic and kinetic model parameters are used to describe this process. There include two part of this process. One is the reactive distillation to make DMC and co-product ethylene glycol, and another is to separate the azotarpe of Methanol/ Dimethy carbonate. A search procedure is proposed to obtain the optimum process design and operating condition of this process. The optimum design flowsheet is obtained by minimizing the Total Annual Cost (TAC) of this process. The optimum design flowsheet about reactive distillation is obtained first, then the optimum design flowsheet about Pressure-Swing azeotropic distillation column system and extractive distillation column system are obtained respectively. Compared of the two alternative separate methods, we derived that the TAC of extractive distillation column system is much less. After that, we use Aspen DynamicTM to do dynamic simulation. A very simple overall control strategy has been proposed which requires only one tray temperature control loop in each column to hold the high-purity specifications of the two products.
