A Study of Walking Energy Expenditure in Healthy Women with Different Walking Speed Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop the equation of walking energy expenditure and discussed the relation and differences among steps, oxygen consumption and energy expenditure in different walking speed. Methods: 43 healthy women between 40-60 years old participated in three walking tests which speed were 4.0kph, 4.8kph and 5.6kph. VO2 was measured by Vmax 29 Series. The steps and energy expenditure was measured by pedometers. Results: When walking speed is 4.0kph, the relation between total steps and VO2 was significant (p<.05). The Correlation coefficient was significant (p<.05) between the steps and actual energy expenditure in all three walking speed. There was also a significant difference (p<.05) in the energy expenditure transformed by pedometer and VO2 of all three walking speed. Conclusion: The pedometers worn on right waist could measure steps more accurately when walking in normal speed. There was an error of using pedometers measuring walking energy expenditure because of the difference between energy expenditure transformed by pedometer and VO2. The equation was the most accurate when walking at 5.6kph. It was Y=1.728+0.494×BMI+0.64×X (Y=walking energy expenditure, X=walking energy expenditure measure by pedometer), SEE=4.571. Key words: pedometer, energy expenditure, walking speed
