Popis: | 96 The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the motivation of participation and mental toughness. The participants with average age 18.22± 2.36 years, were 450 players of volleyball, basketball and korfball in senior high schools and universities (male=243, female=207). The instruments used in the study included Sport Motivation Scale and Trait Mental Toughness Inventory for Sports. The obtained data were analyzed by independent sample t-test and Canonical Correlation. The findings were as follows: 1. There was no sex difference emerging in the motivation of atheletic participation and the mental toughness for sport. 2. The athletes in high schools had more “intrinsic motivation” than did the athlete in universities. 3. The starting lineup players had more “intrinsic motivation”, “identified regulation”, “positive effort”, anti-pressure” and “endurance” than did the bench players, however, the bench player expressed more “amotivation” than did the starting lineup players. 4. The results of canonical correlation indicated that the self-determined participating motivation and the mental toughness were related to each other through two types of canonical factors. The more intrinsic motivation athletes had, the more positive effort they would show. Besides, the more identified regulation athletes had, the more anti-pressure they would show. The research results are discussed in terms of self-determination theory developed by Deci and Ryan (1985, 1991) and the construct of mental toughness for sport developed by Huang (2004). Suggestions are offered for the practical application and the future researches. |
