An Action Research of Emotional Regulation Program Intervention on an Elementary School Child with Moderate Autism

This study aimed to design action strategies to enhance the emotional regulation of an elementary child with autism and emotional problems as well as to explore the change of emotional regulation on the target subject by implementing the emotional regulation program. This action research consists of three action strategies. First, the target subject was taught the basic knowledge of emotional regulation, including emotional awareness, emotional expression and emotional regulation strategies. Second, Role-playing and discussion of role-playing were adopted. The child was taking turns to take different roles which were taken from the child's daily emotional events by using positive emotional behavior support. Third, the self-monitoring was designed to monitor emotional problems of the target subject. Through the implementation of self-management strategies, the target subject practiced perceiving emotions, expressed emotions and used emotional regulation strategies to demonstrate positive behavior. Based on the observations of the implementation of the three action strategies, the interviews with teachers and the mother, and the changes in scale scores measured, the following research findings were concluded: 1.The target subject has learned to choose his own applicative strategies of emotional regulation through the implementation of emotional regulation intervention. 2.Role-playing activities to help the target subject use the strategies of emotional regulation could be applied to natural situations. 3.Learning self-management strategies helps the target subject to self-monitor, self-evaluate and self-reinforce the positive behaviors. 4.To enhance the target subject on the performance of emotional regulation needs the supports from teachers and peers in school. 5.After the implementation of emotional regulation intervention program, teachers and parents agreed that the target subject made progress in regulating his negative emotions.
