This research focuses on discussing and analyzing the interpretation of John Duke’s art songs on the poems by e.e. Cummings. American musical history and the poets in 20th Century are also introduced. Chapter I is the outline of the purpose and structure of this research, and the development of American music history is introduced in Chapter II. Chapter III focuses on the life and the works of John Duke, including vocal melody, lyrics and piano accompaniment. Chapter IV discusses the life of e.e. Cummings, who is honored as one of the greatest American contemporary poets and is known as an experimentalist and innovator. Based on these four songs, Chapter V analyzes of John Duke’s compositional style and his interpretation of the pieces. Chapter VI concludes this study and recognizes the excellence of both John Duke and e.e. Cummings. With their extraordinary vision, they inspire contemporary artists. Through this study, I find that John Duke and e.e. Cummings, from different professional backgrounds, share the same enthusiastic and passion toward their life as well as their works. This yields the result that their works can move people and become classics. This is the first published analysis of John Duke’s four songs in Taiwan. Two hundred fifty-six of John Duke’s song titles are translated into Chinese to help those who are interested.
