The Study of Port Agency Practice – A Case of Keelung Port

| Popis: | 97 Sea transport is important to world trade economic development since over eighty percent world trade were transported by ships. Sea transport and auxiliary services have been well-developed in Taiwan. Among the auxiliary services, port agent service is important to help the successful operations of ocean carriers’ services. This study employs literature review coupled with data collection from industry to explore the operational strategies and point out some future directions for the successful continued operating port agent services. This study concluded that port agent should enhance its capability to face competition on the following aspects: (1) team services; (2) efficient logistics services; (3) providing market information; (4) risk management; (5) international negotiations and cross-country handling detailed businesses; (6) help on financial control; and (7) providing loyalty services to ensure shipping company’s benefit. This study also provides the following suggestions for operating the shipping agent services as follows: (1) integrity principle; (2) building good relationships with clients and maintain good communication; (3) providing good service results for clients; (4) being strong and independent; (5) acquiring reasonable compensation; (6) providing customized services to clients; (7) enhancement of computerization; (8) maintaining good relationships with port authority; and (9) knowing every aspects of local governmental regulations and local working custom. |
