A study of the interpersonal relationship, self-esteem, hours of internet use, and internet addiction tendency among college students in Taiwan

The purposes of this study were to investigate the background factors, interpersonal relationship, self-esteem, hours of internet use, and internet addiction tendency among college students in Taiwan. The subjects were selected from college students of a national university. By using proportional sampling method, 539 valid samples (response rate 79.0%) provided data with a self-administered questionnaire. Data was analyzed with independent-sample t test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple linear regression. The results of this research were summarized as follows. 1. The level of the subjects’ internet addiction tendency was below average. 2. The internet addiction tendency of male students is higher than that of female students. The internet addiction tendency of freshmen is lower than that of the junior. 3. The internet relationship and hours of internet use were positively associated with internet addiction tendency. However, the interpersonal relationship and self-esteem were negatively associated with internet addiction tendency. 4. The background factors, interpersonal relationship, global self-esteem, hours of internet use could explain 21% variance of internet addiction tendency. 5. The background factors, interpersonal relationship, self-esteem in aspects of life, hours of Internet use could explain 24% variance of internet addiction tendency. At the end of this thesis, these results were discussed and suggestions for education and further studies were provided.
