Popis: | 97 This study used a single-subject research multiple probe design to evaluate the effectiveness of the communication skills from the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Two male students aged 12 years who were severe metal retardation with non-verbal and limited one-word utterances in this study. The instructional program involved six phases. First, each participant learned to exchange a tactile symbol with the researcher (i.e. the communication partner) to request a preferred item or activity. Second, the distance between the researcher and the participant were increased to five steps. Third, the participant were required to discriminate between favorite and unfavorite tactile symbols. Forth, the participant were to complete the sentence structure of “I want” from the sentence strip. Fifth, the participant were to responding to “What do you want?” Sixth, the participant were to comment the question of “What do you want?:” or “What do you see?” Two of the participants completed all six phases of the instructional program. The PECS was effective on the communication skills in phases acquisition and maintenance within the natural settings of the classroom and the home. The PECS was effective on the spontaneous communication in phases acquisition and maintenance within the natural setting of the classroom and the home. The PECS was validated by the related individuals. This study provided the preliminary results that using tactile symbols with strategies from PECS is an effective method to teach communication skills to the seventh graders who are severe mental retardation with limited one-word utterances and non-verbal. |
