Popis: | 97 This thesis aims to explore how the agents construct the boundaries of community and culture in light of Project of Community Integrated Development and ethnic revitalization. The ethnographic site for the thesis is Ailan, Nantou, where Pazeh Ethnic Culture Association of Nantou County is assembled to revitalizes Pazeh, a Plain Aborigines tribe and yet Tie-Shan Community Development Association mobilizes community residents. Although “Ailan” as a place has been constructed by both organizations as a locale for uniting the whole people, it really means different things for those two organizations. The conflict over the definition of “Ailan” may be traced back to historically rooted religious differences, ethnic differences, imagination of culture as well. The thesis focuses on how identity and culture discourses are rendered in local practices. Identity discourses are connected to nationalism and multiculturalism, whereas local practices are the ways various discourses and policies are invoked and used in the local community. In the end, identity discourses and the ways they have been used are really the resources and strategies those two organizations constitute and transform the lines between “us” and “them”. I conclude by emphasizing that culture is not a thing, neither homogeneous nor unified in a location, and that hence locality is always in the making . |
