Life Experience of Normal Elderly Residents Living with Demented Elders in Long Term Care Facilities

Popis: | 97 Mixed placement of demented and non-demented residents is common among long-term care facilities in Taiwan. Behavioral problems resulted from communication difficulty and cognitive impairment in dementia patients often trouble other residents and decrease the quality of care. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the life experience and copying of elders who live with dementia elders in mixed long-term institution. Qualitative research approach and purposive sampling were used. Eleven participants were recruited from a few long-term care institutions in southern Taiwan. Semi-structured interview guide was carried out and data were analyzed by content analysis Method. The result of this study were categorized into Life Situation and Coping Progress including seven themes. The first theme is “being caught in disturbed life ” with three sub-themes: “verbal disturbance”, “behavior disturbance, and “unstable mood’. The second theme is “perception of being disturbed” with four sub-themes:” positive perception and feeling”,”negative perception and feeling”,”expect well die”,”accept living with demented elders in different room”. The rest of themes are “ communicate and persuade”, “avoid”, “Ignore”, “Seek for help” and “sympathy with dementia”. Results of this study will provide caregivers information in understanding life experience of the elders when living with dementia patients and then to improve the quality of life, the comfort life, and social interaction between demented and non-demented elders. |
