The waterwheel-shaped porphyrin pentamer Porphyrin (35), of which all the meso–positions of the central porphyrin core are directly attached with porphyrin units, is an interesting compound in view of synthetic challenge. We have established a simple synthetic route for the preparation of two-dimensional porphyrin tetramer and pentamer with well-defined architectures. The synthetic strategy could enable the preparation of porphyrin arrays with a heterometal in the internal porphyrin core for the studies of electron and energy transfer processes. The porphyrin tetramer with a free meso–position may be used as a building block for the construction of three-dimensional meso–meso linked arrays. Porphyrins (35) and Porphyrin (36) exhibit broad absorptions in the visible region and have rich electrochemical properties.
