Effects on the Nutrition Education of TheIntervention in the Type Ⅱ Diabetes Mellitus patients - A case of Kaohsiung County Renwu Township

Popis: | 97 The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of nutrition education on patients with type II Diabetes Mellitus. Residents from Renwu town of Kaohsiung in Taiwan were given a community 3-in-1 health check set by District Health Center and those who had abnormal blood sugar level were then selected as target participants for this study. A quasi-experiment design was adopted. Paticipants’criteria included: (1) diagnosed with type II Diabetes Mellitus (2) aged above 45 years old (3)no language barrier (4) no mental disease catagrorized by DSM-IV diagnosis (5) having clear consciousness. A total of 30 community residents (male=12, female=18) met the selection criteria and also agreed to join this study. The average age of the participants was 64.4±5.9 years old and 63.3% whose educaton level was below primary school. All participants were given 14 times classroom teaching courses(2-3 hours per course and 12 times for nutrition courses, to enhance their self empowerment. The given courses contained five major subjects, such as Healthy Diet, Food vs. Nutrient, Disease vs. Diet, Food Replacing, Food Nutrition Label and Blood Controlled. A structured questionnaire was used to explore their diet self-efficiency, nutrition knowledge and diet behavior. Daily staple food test and saccharified hemochrome level were also analysed. SPSS 12.0 was adopted for analyses of descriptive statistics, independent t-test and paired t-test.
