The purposes of this research are to investigate the weight of the criteria which affect the trainees of small passenger car choosing a driving school and to identify the pattern of the trainees’ choice. Based on literature review, the objectives and criteria affecting trainees’ choice on driving school were defined. Then, a survey was conducted to determine the weights of each criterion by pairwise comparison based on Analysis Hierarchy Process method. Moreover, in order to identify the pattern of the trainees’ choice on driving school thoroughly, a cluster analysis was employed. The results showed that the most important criteria are tuition fee, transportation cost, good coaching professional competence, teacher-trainee ratio and good public reputations. Meanwhile, the trainees’ responses to the weights of the criteria were found to be consistent. The results of cluster analysis indicated that the trainees can be classified into two groups: cost-evaluation group and comprehensive-evaluation group. There is no significant difference in the weights of teacher-trainee ratio between the two groups. The cost-evaluation group pays more attentions to lower tuition fees and lower transportation cost, while the comprehensive-evaluation group focuses on the all other criteria. It is suggested that the driving school should consider the strategy, such as offer the shuttle bus to lower the transportation costs. On-job-training to upgrade coaches’ professional ability, lower teacher-trainee ratio to offer better teaching quality, to improve pass-test rate, to well prepare for annual evaluation, and then widely promote for good performance of the schools can be used to attract the comprehensive evaluation group.
