The history of Chinese characters has developed for thousands of years. A Chinese character is not only a linguistic symbol in communication, but also a characteristic of Chinese culture. In addition, Chinese characters can reveal the interesting meanings from the variations in structures and contours. The purpose of this study is to create elements based on the analysis of the variations of Oracle Bone scripts, Bronze inscriptions, and Seal characters, and then do a Chinese character patterning. The literature review of this study is divided into four parts. First of all is to introduce the sources and characteristics of Chinese characters. Secondary is to generalize the variations of Chinese characters’ structures and contours. Third, some of graphic cases about Chinese character design are discussed and showed. Finally, a theory of Semiotics that is used in creating formula is also discussed in the literature review. The conclusion of this study indicates that the variations of Chinese characters’ structures, contours, and meanings are ever-changing. Furthermore, Chinese character design and life could be linked with each other. And, more Chinese characters’ characteristics can become creating elements and sources in the further creation. As to the creation of the study, the author created fourteen textile works by a concept “Combing Chinese Character with Life” after getting the results of Chinese character patterning through Semiotic formula.
