Changes in natural weather conditions or human factor, the water content of expansive soils will be changed, what will cause the soil to swell or shrink and will make many problems for civil engineering and human life. The past researches found that addition of nano-materials or solutions to clay soils would change the diffuse double layer thickness of clays, the micro-structure of clay soils were changed so that the mechanical or swelling behavior of clays would be changed. Diffuse double layer thickness is related to volume swelling of clays, in this research, with the addition of nano-materials and aqueous solutions, it will change the diffuse double layer thickness of clay soils, so that the swelling behavior would be improved. In this research, the nano-materials and solutions will be blended with clays, then experiments regarding swelling behavior of clays will be performed in order to understand the influence of addition of different nano-materials and aqueous solutions. Different amount and kinds of nano-materials mixed with clays and clays soaked in different concentration and kinds of aqueous solutions would be studied in this research. After the experiments, the micro-structure of clay soils will be examined by the techniques of SEM. The swelling properties of clays mixed with different amount of nano-materials of several kinds and soaked clays in different concentration of several kinds of aqueous solutions will be studied in order to find optimum addition of nano-materials and aqueous solutions, which gives the better swelling behavior control of clays after improvement.
