The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of multimedia videos on the preoperative anxiety of patients with spinal surgery and the relationships between the preoperative anxiety of patients and their demographic data, past medical experience. The quasi-experimental design was used with the purposive sampling from a typical neurosurgical ward of a medical center in central Taiwan. Subjects were sequentially arranged with the length of the hospital stay and assigned to the control group (n = 32) and then the experimental group (n = 32). A structured questionnaire including the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was given to subjects as a pre-test. After health education was given, a post-test was carried out. Data were analyzed with the independent t-test, the paired t-test, and the Pearson product-moment correlation. The results showed that (1) the preoperative anxiety before and after health education were both at the medium level as measured by the STAI; (2) the preoperative anxiety varied with gender and age and showed that women and young people had higher state anxiety and trait anxiety; (3)subjects knowing failed cases had higher state anxiety and there were no significant relationships between the preoperative anxiety and number of hospital stays, number of surgery, and knowing of successful cases; (4) the experimental group had significant higher state anxiety chang than the control group in pre-test and post-test after the intervention of multimedia education videos. The multimedia education videos for patients with spinal surgery were shown to effectively lessen the preoperative anxiety. The education videos can be applied to clinical practices, providing useful nursing guidance for patients with spinal surgery. Additionally, the results serve as a nursing reference for clinical caregivers to adopt preoperative education and help the patients gain positive surgical experience in the future.
