Popis: | 97 The government agency has worked on reducing the occupational injuries through the legislative requirements including the on-site occupational safety and health training programs. The incidences of campus accidents are high. No occupational health and safety related courses were regularly offered at the primary schools. The concept of safety and health should be implanted since childhood to establish appropriate cognition, attitude and behavior. Therefore, a safe and healthy campus environment can be established. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the intervention of safety and health education for the elementary school students by the changes of knowledge, attitude and behavioral-intention. Meanwhile, the safety and health course contents for the elementary school level were developed according to the occupational safety and health general course curriculum of the university, which was developed by the division environmental protection education of the Ministry of Education. Three safety and health subjects, fire prevention, electricity safety and biological hazards were selected by the teachers of the participated school through a school wide survey. A pretest-posttest control group design intervention evaluation was undertaken to assess the impact on OHS knowledge, attitude and behavioral-intention of the fifth and sixth grade students in the elementary school. The evaluations were performed twice - a pretest before the intervention and a posttest on one day after the intervention. Student’s t-test was applied to compare the differences between pretest and posttest and between groups. In total, 201 students from six classes were included initially. One hundred and eighty-six (90 students as experimental group and 96 students as control group) students completed both pretest and posttest. The basic demographic information of these two groups was not significantly different. The students of the experimental group respond the questions better than the control group did in both knowledge and attitude questions after the intervention. The results of the posttest showed that the experimental group did better in the knowledge questions of fire prevention and electricity safety as well as in the attitude questions of the three topics than the control group did. The experimental group improved more in the fire prevention and electricity safety than the control group did after the intervention. Meanwhile, the control group resulted in lower posttest scores than the pretest scores. Statistically, the experimental group improved significantly in electricity safety and biological hazards in either knowledge or attitude and behavior-intention while compared to the control group. This pilot study proofed that the feasibility to implant the safety and health education to the elementary school by modifying the occupational safety and health curriculum of the college general education. Notably, the knowledge, attitude and behavior-intention of safety and health among the participated pupils are improved by the intervention. This model should be a useful reference to continue developing the safety and health education at the elementary school level.
