Popis: | 97 Taiwanese New Cinema brings the new trend of realism to Taiwan, which is unprecedented in the past. One of the major figures is Edward Yang, who is also recognized as a film sociologist. In a series of his films, characters are surrounded by media and media-related industries scenes to form the unique images of media. Therefore, this thesis adopts both the auteur theory and the sociological perspective to analyze five of his films, namely, Taipei Story, The Terrorizers, A Confucian Confusion, Couples (or Mahjong), A One and a Two. These films present images of media in Taiwan from mid-1980s to the end of the 20th century. They also reflect impacts by ecological structures and cultures in media-related industries. We can further understand Edward’s point of view on changes of ecological structures of media-related industries by images of media depicted among those films. Finally, Edward’s ultimate concern in those media environments is still on his characters. This thesis classifies them into three types: the capitalist class, the middle class, and the teenagers, who, though only a few of them showing self-consciousness, have gradually found their own subjectivities at the end of the 20th century. |
