With the rapid development of the modern science and technology, complex spiral surfaces are employed more and more widely, but their tolerances become narrower and narrower. The universality of application of spiral surfaces in the engineering, the importance of the technology of manufacturing for spiral surfaces has been a critical research project in the field of design and manufacturing. To meet an urgent need for multi-axis NC programming software with higher efficiency and precision and to supply multi-axis NC machining of spiral groove surfaces with theoretic basis, theory on NC machining spiral groove surface is focused on. The key issues such as geometric model and generation for tool path are systematically studied on the basis of an overview and analysis of multi-axis NC machining spiral groove surface and in the light of problems existing in their multi-axis NC technique. This paper researches in the manufacturing complex spiral surfaces with multi-axes NC machine. First, this paper studies various shape of helical groove and employed unit step function to combine a function. We use homogeneous transformation to establish mathematical models of the spiral surfaces. We adapt the theory of coordinate transformation and the theory of envelope to derive the multi-axis NC program of the multi-axis grinding machine according to Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) notation.
