An NTCIP-based Message Set and Dynamic Object Generator for ITS Applications

Web Service is an ideal way for construction of distributed Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) system. However, it is feared that it can increase the brittleness of the systems, since a minor change on the server can result in different Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) and a different service interface. Moreover, the client-side classes must update from new WSDL. The greatest advantage of National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) Simple Transportation Management Protocol (STMP) is its support for dynamic objects which, when combined with a more efficient encoding scheme, dramatically reduce the packet overhead relative to Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). However, STMP is hard to implementation. This research proposes an NTCIP-based message set and dynamic object generator for ITS applications. By utilizing the proposed system, ITS applications communication model could be rapidly generated. By utilizing NTCIP protocols in Communication Layer, a communication model which generated from the proposed system achieves communication and data interoperability across most devices and equipments; the deployment of NTCIP Simple Transportation Management Framework (STMF) also significantly improved the effectiveness of transmission. A prototype system was implemented, and the experimental results show that ITS applications communication model generated by using the proposed system offers a great interoperability, more flexible automation control, reuse, and improved performance.
