It is clear that all considerations included in the seismic-resistant design of bridges are limited to the influences of faults so far. In other words, all effects caused by the shear bands in between the site and the fault were neglected completely. Therefore, at first, the author of this thesis found from the distributions of collapsed bridges caused by the 921 Chi-Chi Earthquake that among these collapsed bridges, some of them were not located along the fault; however, they were situated at the cross sections of shear bands. Based on the above-mentioned finding, some principles of shear bands proposed by the thesis advisor were adopted to construct the relations between each collapsed bridge and its nearby shear bands. These shear bands were carefully identified by the distributions of the relative displacements along both plane and vertical directions for each benchmark in the disaster area. The reasons why a bridge to collapse along a certain specific direction in an earthquake can thus be proved effectively.
