The objective of this study was to explore the impact on sex life of the middle-aged women in Taiwan with myocardial infarction (MI), and how these women coped with the impact after MI. Study design is based on qualitative research with in-depth interview. The subjects are 40-64 year-old middle-aged women, returning home at least 6 months after suffering from myocardial infarction. The purposive snowball sampling method was utilized and there are a total of 9 participants from Tainan, Kaohsiung and so on. The data were collected from April to September 2008 by the semi-structured interview outline through in-depth interviews for 60 to 120 minutes per person. All participants consent to join this research through telephone communication and invitation, and they also consent to record the interview content. The contact sheets must be completed on the date of interview. The recording content is transcribed within 48 hours. A total of 9 transcripts and contact sheets were finished. The data analysis method is the content analysis. We categorized according to the transcripts about the impact on sex life of the middle-aged women after MI and their reactive behaviors. The results showed that three categories are concluded for the middle-aged women subject to the impact of sex life from MI. The first is the sex life quality concealed worry including symptoms of distress, involuntarily, and fear of death and attack; the second is the sexual role loss including the disliked and avoided, tie down, and sense of guilty to the spouse. The third is the sexual dysfunction including the intolerance for sex, the fear of intimacy, and low interest to sex. There are also three kinds of reactive behaviors categorized from the interview content for the women to cope with such impace on sex life. First, the attribute to sex is the reason of MI recurrence, which results in the behaviors such as searching the real causes of MI and self-recognition of symptom improvement. Second, look forward to the future including changing the life routine and recognizing the same sex thing. Third, these women try to comprehend the true essence of relation, so they try to reorganize the conjugal and intimacy relation. With these results, health care providers will be better able to help the middle-aged women enjoy their sex lives after the myocardial Infarction.
