A Study on the Micropolitics of Novice Directors in the Elementary School

This study adopts qualitative research in which six elementary school directors in this position less than three years in Yunlin County had been interviewed. The study aims to explore their career developments, role conflicts, sex consciousness and micropolitical strategies. The conclusion and suggestion have been drawn based on the result of the study. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. Career orientation and development to be teachers were significantly influenced by personal interests and important others. 2. Career advancement to be directors were significantly influenced by personal career planning. 3. Directors should aggressively be the role model. They have to pay attention to school entire planning. Directors have wider services perspectives than teachers. 4. Because of the good attitude, novice directors can play various roles, including assistants for principals, middle leaders, planners or the executives in schools. 5. Role conflicts come from novice directors’ different personal characters or role expectations from various sources. Role conflicts had been occurred among teaching, family and administration. 6. Sex consciousness affects career choice and development. The phenomenon of “men in administration and women in teaching ” had been found in school. However, the abilities between male and female professionals were no difference. 7. Facing principals and other department directors, novice directors often adopted protecting strategies; while facing teachers and the staff, novice directors often adopted both influenceing strategies and protecting strategies.
