A Study of Correlations between Moral Elements in the Elementary School's Second Grade Textbooks and the Grade 1-9 Curriculum Competence Indicators

Popis: | 99 The purposes of this research were to find the correlations between moral elements in the elementary school's second grade textbooks and the Grade 1-9 Curriculum competence indicators in Taiwan. The research analyzed 13 moral elements of main categories as follows: caring, respect, fairness, manners, diligence, frugalness, filial piety, responsibility, honesty, cooperation, rule-following, provincialism & patriotism, and thankfulness. Content analysis was used to examine the moral elements in the second grade textbooks which were published by following publishers: Nan-Yi, Han-Lin, Kang-Hsuan and the Ministry of Education (Math only). The researcher concluded the following findings: 1. For all of the second grade learning areas that were related to moral competencies indicators, Integrative Activities have the highest percentage at 45%, where Health & Physical Education making up a close second at 42% and Mathematics consists of 0. Comparing the correlations between moral competencies indicators and the moral elements, the research found that the top 3 most correlated elements were respect, caring, and rule-following. On the other hand, fairness, thankfulness, responsibility and honesty had no correlations to any competencies indicators. However, there were a high percentage of moral teachings in the six major issues competencies indicators, where Career Development, Environmental Education, and Human Rights Education were 100% correlated to moral elements. 2. According to the researcher's textbooks content analysis, different publishers' textbooks contained different percentage of moral elements, generally speaking, in Mandarin, Life Curriculum, Integrative Activities, and Health & Physical Education, ‘caring’ was the most common moral elements, while ‘honesty’ was the most insufficient moral elements found in textbooks. 3. According to the findings of the correlations between the content of Han-Lin’s textbooks and moral competence indicators, Mandarin textbooks were 80% correlated, while Life Curriculum textbooks were 82% correlated, Health & Physical Education textbooks 97% correlated, Integrative Activities textbooks 50% correlated and the last Mathematics textbooks were only 5% correlated. 4. According to the researcher's analysis the correlations between the moral competence indicators and moral teaching goals in the teaching materials the Han-Lin publisher offered, it was noticed that the moral indicators were neglected. |
