A application study on fortunate images of character design in Taiwan.

The construction of Chinese character strokes can be regarded as a kind of image. The construction and writing of Chinese character form a unique art class. The Chinese character related calligraphy art, decorative pattern art, and other kinds of art forms contain broad art knowledge and have various expressing forms.The decorative pattern to Chinese character has special characteristics and is charming. It is like drawing, however, it does not violate the basic construction of character. Therefore, it has become a particular art form in the history of Chinese culture. This study is aiming at exploring the application of characters in auspicious images from the field of visual communication design. Furthermore, this study discuses issues based on the point of view from modern design. The visual communication design research field in this study is limited to recent 20 years. It chooses New Year print (1985~2003 and 2007), posters (A.D. 1993~2008), printed advertisement of newspaper (the year of the republic era 87~97), printed advertisement of magazine (A.D. 1998~2008) and Chinese Spring Festival couplets from the industry as research analyzing object. This study is separated into four main parts. The first part is about characters and exploring and induction of character graphic design related method. It collects the origin, development, application, and graphic design references of characters. It also collects application reference of Taiwan local visual communication design. The second part collects and categorizes auspicious character sample images.The third part is about analyzing the meaning, shape, and constructing relations of auspicious character sample images. This part is mainly about the exploration of forms. The forth part analyzing the communication meaning and intention of auspicious character sample images. In addition, it discuss about contemporary auspicious image heritage from the characters. The overall analyzing is of qualitative research. It applies Purposive Sampling method to collect samples. The main method of this research is to collect history reference and analyzing its content. The results are as following: The character forms can be separated into four types. The standardized common forms are most broadly applied. The “additive transformation (變化添飾型)” and “infix transformation (變化嵌入型)” have the most abundant variations. The figures of characters are mostly expressed in round and fullness shapes. The reason of this is that round and fullness shapes reflect the traditional concept of “bliss(福)”. In other words, it can represent the symbol of perfect, longevity, and happiness. The regular script, running script, sung character, and boldface are the fonts which are utilized the most. In addition, the emergence of computer fonts fit to the need of newness and varieties from mass population. A square appears most often for the frame of characters. Theses images are broadly applied on many kinds of mediums and objects and they can be the best images to represent the concept of New Year. The characteristics of character can be divided into descriptive, functional, and decorative character. The descriptive characters are often seen. These 5 reading tracks appear the most times in this study. The analysis result shows that different word tracks are often applied in spring festival couplet and New Year print for editing layout. Posters are often presented with single word; therefore, it has fewer plans on word tracks. However, word reading tracks provide more choices for readers. It increases the joys for reading words. This study finds out that spring festival couplet uses words the most. Most of the auspicious image word in spring festival couplets is common auspicious words. It has higher rate of applying single word and the themes of it are more demotic and general. It fit to citizen’s culture and is easily to be used for mass population. New Year print and poster belongs to creation, therefore, it express more personal emotion from creator. Infixed or additive auspicious character and graph looks plentiful and have various auspicious implied meaning. The auspicious character graph of newspaper and magazine are mainly for commercial usage. They are often combined with auspicious words and presented as background or illustration. The character of auspicious graph not only has traditional meaning but also contains the heritage between through eras. In different era, it expresses different forms by those same basic words and create new concept for it. In the analysis, it figures out that a single traditional auspicious character contains individual meaning. However, it contains multiple inner meaning when time goes by. Therefore, it can be concluded that characters will change though eras. Different era will have different character combination ways and time creates various aspects for these graphs. The character of auspicious graph reflects the culture of Taiwanese society; it presents the following 3 points: (1) The theme of the character auspicious graph expresses the Chinese nation life custom. It utilized multiple meanings of word to combine with images. (2) It reflects the people’s mind which pursues good fortune. “Bring in wealth and treasure” are often appears in auspicious character graphs. Furthermore, an auspicious graph often contains the god of wealth and odd-shaped gold. The vitality of forms represents the eagerness and wish of people toward wealth. (3) It utilizes the characteristics of birthpet to combine with auspicious character and graph. It shows the Chinese nation’s traditional concept of attaching importance to birthpet.
