A Study of Developing A School-based Eco-education Fern Garden Curriculum and Its Educational Effects Evaluation

The purpose of this study is to establish an eco-education fern garden (EEFG), and to develop a school-based curriculum (SBC) for outdoor teaching activities. The teaching effects of the EEFG-SBC on scientific attitudes (SA), science process skill (SPS) and fern related knowledge (FK) were evaluated. Two major stages consisted of this study. In the first stage, a qualitative action research was conducted: (1) to construct and plant the EEFG, (2) to develop and apply the SBC, and (3) to modify and reconstruct the EEFG and SBC through the in-depth reflection and free discussion process among teachers to become a useful teaching program. In the second stage, a single-group design experiment with 8-weeks teaching unit was executed, and FK, SA and SPS were measured both before and after the teaching to evaluate their learning effects. Results of this study reveal that (1) a consensus on EEFG has been achieved by all school participants, teachers, parents and students were involved. (2) significant differences on FK after SBC reached 30% improvement, (3) there is no statistical significant improvement on SA test, (4) only “observation” skill was improved.
