A Study on the Climate Affecting Number of Visitors of the Chitou Forest Recreational Areas

The numbers of visitors of the forest recreational area are increasing recently. According to the census done by Taiwan’s tourism bureau, the numbers of visitors visiting Taiwan’s recreational areas boosted from 3,746,657 in 2004 to 4,650,298 in 2007, which is equal to 24%. In 2004, 2.64% of tourists were counted in forest recreational area. The percentage increased to 3.1 in 2007. There are 23 national forest recreational areas in Taiwan. The numbers of visitors of Chitou forest recreational area in 2007 are 1,044,883, which is the most popular forest recreational area in Taiwan. Chitou forest recreational area is located in Nantou County. There are lots of conspicuous scenic spots in this area. Besides, there are more than 300 kinds of herbal plants and 1,300 kinds of woody plants. Those make Chitou forest recreational area a natural classroom. This place is in suburban district so people usually use ferial time to visit this area. This study shows that holiday visitors are the triple of non-holiday visitors. Also, the result shows most visitors go to Chitou forest recreational area when it is a comfortable day. As the daily rainfall increases the visitors decrease. This study is going to analyze the long-term trend of the numbers of visitors, the temperature and rainfall of Chitou forest recreational area by using time-series analysis. Independent t-test is used to test the visitor numbers in holidays and non-holidays, as well as rainy days and non-rainy days. Besides, ANOVA is used to recognize the difference numbers of tourists between different levels of typhoons, holidays and seasons. Multiple regression is used to analyze how recent disaster influences the numbers of tourists of Chitou forest recreational area.
