Popis: | 97 In recent years, bicycles surged up again in the whole world, bringing back more than 200-years of history. It changed from the childhood recollection to the modern adult’s leisure target. Meanwhile, the picture book which was created specifically for children also became a popular commodity in the adult lifestyle. These two items, resembling each other and looking like simple goods, actually also contain an uncommon power. The ancient and fashionable bicycle has gloriously survived through two centuries. When it enters the world of a picture-book though, what appearance will it present? In order to investigate more thoroughly the implicit meanings of the bicycle in picture books, the writer must inquire its origin, evolution, and explicit functions first. Four different explicit functions are presented in the picture books: Game tool, transportation vehicle, work tool, and leisure tool. They implied four types of connotations: past childhood events (joy of growth, friendship medium, pure dream, freedom and risk, mood transition), kinship connections (parent-child, grandparent and grandchild, siblings), the good old days (down memory lane, out of fashion goods), and situations (story background, atmosphere setting, character personality). It doesn’t matter if it’s in reality or in the picture book; the bicycle is usually not only “a vehicle”, but holds many functions and symbolizes rich multi-social cultural meanings. By unfolding these connotations, it will help to promote our pleasure of reading picture books and expand our field of vision. Furthermore, picture books can serve as the playground for bicycles. As long as we keep on going forward, we may enjoy the speed and discover the enormous world within. |
