The purpose of this study is to understand client’s experiences of perceiving power in counseling room and to explain the meaning of client’s experiences through the viewpoint of hermeneutic phenomenological methodology. The researcher invited six clients who had ever perceived power in their experiences of individual counseling for interview and applied the method of thematic analysis in this research. Results of this study show that though the participants did not point out their expectations about counseling specifically or elaborate their viewpoints about client’s rights directly, from interview participants revealed their belief that a client should have autonomy of carrying out personal will and the rights of avoiding being harmed and of being respected. The conflicts related to client’s rights become an important clue for clients to decide the power disparity in counseling. The researcher explained three different power phenomena in counseling room respectively. Firstly, in the situation of a counselor being more powerful than a client, client’s experiences could be described as: the client never had the feeling of being close to his/her counselor and perceived the conflicts between oneself and the counselor, the client felt overwhelmed by the counselor’s doings and thought that personal rights were damaged, or the client chose to sacrifice personal rights and to compromise for private reasons. Secondly, in the situation of a client and a counselor being equal in power, the phenomenon could be interpreted as: the client felt oneself powerful and able to make decision for self, the client felt his/her counselor’s behavior and his/her personal rights were respected, or the client felt no threat to his/her personal rights in stress-free counseling relationship. Thirdly, in the situation of a client being more powerful than a counselor, client’s experiences could be described as: the client thought that the counselor’s apology and change were responsible for damaging the rights of the client, or the client felt that he/she had independent autonomy and his/her personal rights had precedence over the counselors’. Furthermore, the researcher made a comprehensive survey of client’s experiences of perceiving power and found that: it was difficult to perceive power directly and the existence of power was often recognized through emotions and feelings, the power hierarchy was decided from the client’s judgment on who is the settler, close counseling relationships could influence the client’s perception of power, the feeling of power control interacted with the client’s self-concept, counselors took expression, attitude, language and knowledge as the media of power, clients perceived less being more powerful, the participant’s backgrounds of studying counseling influenced their expectation about counselor and the judgment of power, and the value that Chinese emphasize harmonious relation influenced client’s strategies of facing powerful person. Finally, this study proposed several suggestions for counseling practitioners and educators.
