Popis: | 96 This research was designed to explore the process and the effect of play actions which were integrating into leisure and applied mathematics curriculum in an elementary special education class. The participants in this study were 6 sixth graders from a mentally retarded class. The play activities involved in the leisure curriculum were implemented as three stages: The play activity in the first stage was the constructive play; the dramatic play was implemented at the second stage; and the third stage was plays with rules. The play activities integrated into the applied mathematics curriculum were divided into two stages: Several simple games were inserted into the course in the first stage, and the money games were adopted to help students learn how to use money in the second stage. The research findings were as follow: 1. Functional plays were dominated among the participants with mental retardation. 2. The intervention does promote the play level in some mentally challenged children. 3. The participants’ intelligence and their social skills affected the learning effects of play actions. 4. The effects of the constructive plays and the plays with rules were better than the dramatic play in this study. 5. When integrating plays into the applied mathematics curriculum, play should be conducted in a group format. 6. The learning effects could be enhanced by using reinforcers and play materials. Based on the research findings, some suggestions were provided for further researches: 1. Participants observed should be limited up to three students. 2. The study may be conducted with different research methods. 3. Conduct more play action studies on different curriculum. 4. The sufficient manpower support can alleviate the teaching pressure on the instructors. 5. More researches should be done on the play curriculum in the classes with mentally retarded students. |
