A Study on the Relationship Between Physical Activity Quantity and Motor Coordination in 9-12 Years Old Elementary Students

The purpose of this study was to probe into the correlation between physical activity quantity and motor coordination ability in 9-12 years old elementary students. A stratified cluster sampling method was used to obtain 514 students (269 males, 245 females) in 5 elementary schools in Taichung County. The research methods included: 1. Using a form of three-day physical activity recalling table to analyze the quantity of the children’s physical activity level, 2. the formal items which were more discriminative for measuring coordination ability were composed of cylinder casting (hand-eye coordination), left and right breadthways jumping (foot-eye coordination), badminton throwing (systemic coordination), and standing on one foot with their eyes closed (static balance) after testing the discrimination. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics to comprehend basic data characteristics of the subjects; compared the difference between the quantity of pupils’ physical activity level and their coordination ability by using t-test; Pearson’s product-moment correlation was used to analyze the relationships between the quantity of physical activity level and coordination ability. The level of significance was α= .05. The results of this experiment indicated that: 1. The quantity of physical activity level in 9-12 year-old pupils would decrease progressively while they were growing. However, this variation was not significant (p>.05). 2. The coordination ability of the elder pupils was superior to the younger. However, there was a significant difference on 9-10 yaer-old pupils and 10-11 yaer-old pupils (p.05). 4.
