Trust-building Mechanisms and Knowledge Exchange in Virtual Communities

Successful virtual communities (VCs) are depended on knowledge exchange. It is difficult to exchange knowledge among members of VCs, because people will think why they have to spend time and effort to share knowledge with strangers and the knowledge is correct? Therefore, this study indicated the key factors to enhance knowledge exchange among members are building trust in members and VCs. To review the literature on trust, most previous research has focused on electronic commerence context. It still very few studies examined how to building trust in VCs. Secondly, most scholars focus on only one view of trust – interpersonal trust or system trust. Addressing these gaps, this study proposes a theoretical framework for trust-building mechanism and investages how trust impact on knowledge exchange. This study surveyed 324 members of IT professional VC. Results indicate that communication quality, relationship quality and knowledge enhance is positively related to trust in member of VC. In addition, system quality, service quality and knowledge quality is positively related to trust in website of VC. Moreover, two types of trust will enhance knowledge exchange.
