The MRT projects are characterized by considerable amount of budgets and complicated interfaces so that the progress of rate and quality play critical roles in the construction. However, the managers in construction industry usually deal with interface problems according circumstances rather than taking systematical and effective measures. Besides, the company is likely to lose the experiences and techniques associated with the professionals when they leave their jobs. To mitigate those problems, hiring external technical consultants for interface problems become common despite its uneconomical and unscientific characteristics. Therefore, it has appeared as an essential issue which needs to be addressed immediately in the construction industry. To grasp the insights of interface problems, the research starts from practical research to explore major factor for the extension of MRT construction project. The findings show that the interface factor can explain the variance as highly as 18%, and thus imply that interface problems should be further examined. Then quantitative methods are applied to investigate 28 specific interface problems to extract 6 underlying interface factors. The results indicate that “management”, “experience”, and “coordination” factors are the most crucial to project performances, and all of them can be regards as “know-how” factors. To improve such serious interface problems, the research utilized a knowledge base, which involves four modules (inquiry, data, screen and comparison, and problem-solving) to establish a knowledge base of MRT interface management with a view to providing better solutions Finally, a web-based application system about interface management in track engineering is established to help share the insights with such industry specialists. Moreover, such system can facilitate the exchange of managerial information among large constructers, and supply managerial technique consultation to medium or small constructers via internet. Consequently, this research establish a mechanism, not restrained by space, time or location, to create cost advantage, reduce waste of human resource, improve operational efficiency and pass down the managerial techniques and experiences through knowledge sharing and techniques integration.
