In recent years, mobile phones get more compact in size due to technology advancement. Therefore, the design of the lens of a mobile phone is not only to require high imaging quality, but also to strictly limit the total thickness of the entire lens. Under the circumstances, this article is mainly to investigate how to design a camera lens that is not only compact but also satisfied to the requirements of users. From the beginning of the specification preparation, ZEMAX optical simulation software was used for the design, analysis, and the definition of merit function. Moreover, the triplet aspherical plastic lens structure was adopted. Through the use of aspherical design, the aberration could be effectively improved and the imaging quality enhanced. Furthermore, the number of lenses was reduced and, finally, an optical design for the camera lens of digital mobile phone was completed with a short total thickness of 3.169 mm. In this design, not only it is compact in size and of low manufacturing cost, but also it has good imaging quality. Finally, the tolerance, which is commonly seen in the manufacturing and assembly processes of lens, was analyzed. RSS(root sum of squares) method was used for tolerance analysis and proved that the lens designed by this study is suitable for mass production.
