A new-design high-performance Brushless DC Motor driving system is proposed in this thesis. Several driving methods which used relationship between Hall-effect sensor signals, back EMF and current command signals are discussed. The objective of design methods is to obtain good performances and meet desired specification. A hardware scheme consists of dsPIC30F4011 microprocessor, power inverter, and the control strategy algorithm is established for experimentation. A computer-aided software MagneForce is used to simulate and analyze the studied BLDCM in order to characterize the motor’s static parameters. MagneForce's employs the finite element method and a Spice circuit model in an iterative approach. The parameterized geometry system as well as its new flexible geometry modeler allows users to design and verify the mechanical geometry and magnetic circuit properties. The simulation results on a 200W BLDCM are compared with the measured results to demonstrate the performance of the MagneForce. The PID control method implemented in a dsPIC30F4011 microprocessor has been developed to validate the BLDCM driver system. Experimental tests on a 3-phase 8 pole 6 slot BLDCM at different operation conditions show that the better improvement in overall performance has been achieved by the developed control strategy.
