Due to the high petroleum price and increasing importance of sustainable environment, the applications of distribution generation have drawn great attention of governments, people, and investors. Traditionally, distributed generations were not involved in the distribution networks during planning, design, and operating considerations. Whenever a distributed generation is connected to the distribution network, it will broadly impact the existing system’s characteristics. Hence, this thesis will briefly collect related literature on the impact of distributed generation’s grid connection and its power quality issues. The thesis will then investigate the sizing and placement of distributed generation in distributed Networks. The proposed method utilizes Ant Colony Optimization to search the optimal sizing and placement of distributed generation in distributed networks subjected to electricity market regulations, system operation constraints, and investment budget limitation. The thesis considers the initial build-up cost, maintenance and operating cost, and revenue of electricity sale of distributed generations, and defines the ration of net present value to the initial build-up cost as the performance index (PI). Then the aim is to find the maximal PI for a given distribution system with some specified location of distributed generations. In the thesis, an 8-bus distribution network is used for simulation, analysis, discussion, and verification of the feasibility of the proposed method.
