In this study, forty-five commonly used essential oils were employed to investigate the DPPH radical scavenging ability, total phenolic contents, metal chelating activity, reducing power, ABTS.+ radical cation decolorisation capacity and analysis of their major chemical compositions. (1) The DPPH free radical scavenging ability of clove bud essential oil is the best in these essential oils, and has EC50 at 36 (µg/mL). (2) The metal chelating activity of basil essential oil is the best in these essential oils, EC50 is 984 (µg/mL). (3) The reducing power of cinnamon leaf essential oil is the best in these essential oils. 10mg/mL of cinnamon leaf essential oil was shown equivalent of 119% of BHA. (4) The ABTS.+ free radical scavenging ability of clove bud is the best in these essential oils, EC50 is 10 (µg/mL). (5) 1mg/mL of cinnamon leaf, clove bud and thyme red essential oils were shown 420、480 and 270 (1 mg/g of GAE) of total phenolic contents. It is clear that the amount of the phenol compounds in essential oils and the DPPH free radical and ABTS.+ free radical scavenging ability are in direct proportion. The results of these studies were applied in the comparison of lotion with some expensive commercial antioxidative cosmetics. Obviously, in addition of essential oils into cosmetic is valuable in skin care products.
