Popis: | 96 This paper is to study the characteristics of variations in temperature and precipitation in Northern Taiwan by the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method. The data included monthly temperature of 44 stations and precipitation of 42 stations from 2002 to 2007 are used in this study. The results are shown in spatial pattern and time series for annual mean, summer time (May to October), and winter time (November to April) respectively. The results show that the spatial pattern by the first EOF (EOF1) component has sufficient to explain the credibility of more than 80% of the temperature variations. The percentage of variation in EOF component is as follows: the annual mean temperature of 99.33%, the summer time of 97.48%, the winter time of 97.78%, respectively. The spatial analysis also shows that the phase of temperature in northern Taiwan is consistent with warming or cooling. This is mainly affected by the topography and geography and related with the synoptic weather systems. The seasonal characteristics are obviously significant in the time domain. For the precipitation aspect, the EOF1 and EOF2 patterns to describe variations in regional precipitation. The interpretation of the EOF1 and EOF2 in the percentage of precipitation variations are as follows: the annual precipitation of 72.87% and 14.39%, the summer precipitation of 75.69% and 9.57%, and the winter precipitation of 64.28% and 26.90%, respectively. The spatial distribution of EOF1 in precipitation is revealed by the impact of the weather systems. Meanwhile the EOF2 of the annual precipitation displays of the topography and geography, and the EOF2 component of winter time illustrates the impact of the northeast monsoon. In contrast to temperature, the temporal variations of precipitation are more complicated. The reason is that signal is weak in precipitation for summer time which the rainfall is more random and mainly come from plum and typhoon seasons. Key words: temperature, precipitation, EOF |
