This thesis aims to investigate the effect of clustering on the energy consumption of data transmission in clustering-based wireless sensor networks. To reduce the transmission energy of the normal sensors (NSs), a fixed clustering (FC) method is proposed to uniformly divide the sensor area into clusters and to take on the cluster head (CH) by the random rotation of the cluster. Thus, the energy consumption of sensing nodes can be balanced as each sensor node has taken on cluster head by increasing rounds. The comparison results show that the proposed FC can definitely reduce the energy consumption and make the network lifetime longer than that of low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) deployment methods. In order to reduce the energy consumption of cluster head and that of each sensing nodes, increase the energy usage efficiency of sensing nodes, and also find the long lifetime cluster-based wireless sensor networks, the optimal number of cluster ( ) on energy consumption efficiency in sensing area is elicited via numerical analysis and real simulation, which represents the clustering effect of energy consumption efficiency as the mobile base station is deployed different positions. Thus, the optimal energy efficiency and network lifetime of clusters in the cluster area can be found. It is expected to obtain the optimal clusters of energy consumption efficiency and prolong the network lifetime for wireless sensor networks.
