Investigation and Improvement of the Enviroment Colorin Longtan Township, Taoyuan County-Case Studies of Sunkeng Village, Sunlin Village, and Daping Village-

In Longtan Township, Sunkeng, Sunlin, and Daping, located nearby the Shimen reservoir, are not only deep traditional Hakka settlements but also hold rich natural landscape. Therefore, this region possesses deep potential for developing culture and leisure tours. However, inappropriate development and massive use of artificial color cause the appearance of the color in the entire region to be disordered and unbalanced. By studying the environment color of this region, the goals of this thesis are to discover the existing artificial color contradicting the primitive spatial color and to establish a suitable plan of the environment color able to be the basis for planning and performing the color appearance of this region in the future. We adopt the so-called “observation technique”, namely observing and recording the environment color of a place by using complete participant's angle. We photograph the natural color and artificial color of the place, and compare them with the color record. We also paint watercolors to confirm the base color of the place for being the basis of the plan of the environment color. Then we refer to the cases on the environment color presented in Jean-Philippe Lenclos and Dominique Lenclos’ work and explain the records by using the place spirit proposed by Norberg-Schulz to discover the uncoordinated artificial color and establish the suitable plan of the environment color. After investigating and researching, we have found that these three villages have many same elements, like traditional buildings, ancient trails, and so on. These elements construct the native color of the region. The native artificial color of the elements and the natural color of their environment form the unique base color of the region. Therefore, we suggest that we should reduce the usage of excessive-chroma artificial color and adopt the primary color and materials as far as possible to consist with the base color. Thus the appearance of the environment color of the region will be harmonious and the distinctive quality of the environment color can be presented. We also enumerate the existing artificial color inconsistent with the base color in detail in three villages and propose an improvement plan for correction. We believe that the improvement plan of the environment color that we have proposed will greatly promote the quality of the environment and of the tours in this region.
