Most of human civilization began to develop from the coast or river side areas in which the human activities from daily life uses to agricultural irrigation, many industrial and commercial activities and transportation have close relationship with water. With the enhancement of life quality and the progress of conception of sustainable environment, the functions of urban river also have some changes. Through continued evolutions with times, riverside space has gradually become a site of entertainment and leisure for many people. Due to such changes, urban riverside has given the birth to much waterfront leisure life and culture that could satisfy the demand from people who seek the release from pressure accumulated by their busy life. Consequently, the design and planning of riverside space has nearly become an important indicator for urban development. However, the components of landscape of riverside space will affect people’s visual feeling. In the process of planning and design, the function and facilities may meet the demands from residents, but possibly not concretely express their conception to residents’ visual feeling. Therefore, with the residents as subjects, the research began with psychological-physical model and cognition model of perceptive preference theory and tried to find out the direction of residents’ preference in the landscape of riverside space. It is hoped that through macro landscape of urban riverside, we could understand residents’ visual effects and feeling and find out a more concrete direction of development that could be a reference for future practical planning and designs and for the authorities in establishing related evaluation standards. Taking Hsinchu East Gate City Water Accessibility Park as An Example and people who visit the water accessibility park as the subjects, this research gave the description of results through descriptive statistics of number of samples, T-test of independent samples, Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation analysis, factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. The important findings of the result were as follows: 1. The arising of commercial space on the side of river side had direct effects on the visual sense of richness and confusion; 2. Most of people expressed their satisfaction in the perceptive evaluation of riverside space, but not satisfied with the maintenance of water quality; 3. The characteristics of people who resided in different places had no significant effects on perceptive preference; 4. The public art works installed in the riverside space drew stronger attraction of visual aesthetic sense from people; 5. Natural and diversified application was one of the primary factors that affected people’s perceptive preference of riverside space.
