Signal Detection for a 4-by-4 Hybrid Space-Time Block Coded System

A promising technique for increasing the data rates for the next-generation wireless communication is to combine multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The hybrid space time block code spatially multiplexed (STBC-SM) OFDM system can provide both high spatial diversity and high multiplexing gains simultaneously under frequency selective MIMO channels. In this thesis, we study the baseband receiver for the 4-by-4 IEEE 802.11n Draft 2.0 standard, an example of the STBC-SM OFDM system. The complete algorithms for the baseband receiver include timing synchronization, frequency offset estimation, channel estimation, phase tracking, and signal detection. Our focus is to compare the performance of several detection algorithms, including the zero-forcing (ZF) detection, the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection, the QR-decomposition with successive interference cancellation (SIC) detection. We also discuss the performance of these algorithms with the results obtained from computer simulations.
