This thesis studies the cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions in Taiwan Southern Min. In the literature, Akmajian (1970), Gundel (1977) and Collins (1991) argue that cleft constructions are derived from pseudo-cleft constructions. Based on Tang(1981), Lee (2005), and Shyu’s (2007) study of cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions in Mandarin Chinese, I discuss the cleft, pseudo- cleft and equational pseudo-cleft sentences in TSM. There are three important elements in focus constructions: si, ti and e. Si is a focus marker in cleft constructions, but a topic marker in pseudo-cleft and equational pseudo-cleft constructions; ti is a viewpoint aspect marker to mark the midpoint of the bound event; e is an imperfect marker in cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions, but when si is a topic marker in equational pseudo-cleft constructions, e is a relative clause marker. I argue that from the same base structure, a cleft construction is derived first and then a pseudo-cleft is derived. If the derivation direction is opposite, it is impossible to derive the cleft sentences. Such an analysis is different from Akmajian (1970), Gundel (1977) and Collins (1991), but accords with Bachrach (2004).
