Voltage fluctuations caused by the rapid changes of loads in the power system may give rise to noticeable illumination flickers of lighting equipments. Besides, flicker also can cause misoperation of the electrical devices. This thesis proposes a conceptual design of flickermeter based on IEC (International Electrotechnical Committee) standard 61000-4-15 with a new demodulator. Literature survey shows that many detection methods have been proposed, such as the indirect demodulation, the least absolute value, the Kalman filter, and the adaptive linear neuron (ADALINE) methods. In this thesis, the performances of four detection methods for voltage flicker measurement – the squaring demodulation, the discrete wavelet synchronous detection, the ADALINE, and the enhanced phase-locked loop (EPLL) are evaluated and compared. In addition, this thesis proposes an improved demodulation method to extract the voltage envelope. Simulations and actual measurements show that the flickermeter with the proposed method yields relatively accurate flicker measurements.
