One of the outstanding sinologists, Arthur Waley (1889-1966), who is also the author of The Nine Songs: A Study of Shamanism in Ancient China. This book contains not only the English translation of ‘the nine songs’ (Jiuge, 九歌), but also the study of Shamanism in ancient China. And there are three purposes of this thesis. First of all, I will discuss the distinguishing features of Waley’s translation of ‘the nine songs’. Secondly, I will discuss some questions of his research approaches of Shamanism in ancient China. Third, I will explore the influences of his research on Chuci (楚辭) study in Europe and Taiwan. Waley treated ‘the nine songs’ as important documents and used them to discuss the Shamanism in ancient China from cultural aspect. In the beginning of The Nine Songs, he explained that why he choose ‘shaman’ to translate the character of ‘wu (巫)’. Then he found the records of Shamanism in the history of China from Han dynasty and try to establish the development of Shamanism in ancient China. Meanwhile, he also took the resources from different areas which around China and used them as examples to figure out the relationship between the deity and the shaman. Waley’s research showed the brand new ideas in the study of ‘the nine songs’, however, he did not notice that the ‘wu’ was originated in China actually. Therefore, this thesis will focus on the definition of ‘wu’ and the development of Shamanism in ancient China. Since Waley’s study has indicated the new ideas of ‘the nine songs’, this thesis will try to build up a short history of Chuci study in sinology. Furthermore, I will discuss the influences that caused by Waley’s research in Taiwan and the translation of the Chinese character--‘wu’.
