This thesis will be probing into the importance of taro(soli) in Yami society in Orchid Island. As the food, taro(soli) has the function of feeding people; besides, it is considered a gift for social purpose and sacrificial offerings to gods in important ceremonies. Moreover, the quantity of taros is not only the symbol of individual production ability of production, but also family position and prestige in society. Author tries to examine from mechanism of the division of labour by gender in core family from the concept of “divide” by local people; in other words, it’s by the division of “Men - Flying fish(alipangpang) - Ocean” vs. “Women - Taro(soli) - Paddy Field (field for planting taros)” to understand the constructive influence of this concept by the pattern of food production for core family. In the meantime, by observing this production pattern of men and women during process of socialization, we can see how this concept of “divide” to form the different working field and territory of men and women. In addition, it also structures the independence of distinct fields of output and techniques expertise between men and women. Since taro(soli) comes from Yami Women’s ongoing hard work in the mountain; the comparison of body techniques and production know-how of Yami women in paddy field (field for planting taros), and taro’s cultural-social role helps to disclose women’s role in the mechanism of division of labour by gender in core family, and then to emphasize the unique of Women production in Orchid Island society.
